India’s First Ahmedabad-Dholera 200-kmph Rail Corridor Gets ₹20,667 Crore Approval

In a major boost to Gujarat’s infrastructure and Dholera Smart City’s development, the Union Cabinet has approved the construction of the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera Semi High-Speed Double Rail Line Project at an estimated cost of ₹20,667 crore. The 134-kilometre corridor will become India’s first semi-high-speed railway project developed using indigenous technology. The new rail corridor will directly connect Ahmedabad, Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), the upcoming Dholera International Airport, and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex, significantly improving regional connectivity and accessibility. The project is also a key component of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), further strengthening Gujarat’s position as a manufacturing and logistics hub. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, trains on the corridor will have a design speed of 220 kmph and an operational speed of 200 kmph. Once operational, travel time between Ahmedabad and Dholera is expected to reduce dramatically, with the Sarkhej-Dholera journey taking only around 34 minutes, enabling convenient daily commuting and same-day return travel. The project is expected to enhance connectivity for approximately 284 villages with a combined population of nearly five lakh people. Besides improving passenger mobility, the corridor will support industrial expansion, attract investments, and accelerate economic activities around Dholera Smart City and its surrounding regions. The semi-high-speed railway is also expected to deliver environmental benefits by reducing dependence on road transport. Official estimates suggest the project could help save around 0.48 crore litres of oil imports and reduce nearly 2 crore kilograms of carbon emissions, contributing to India’s sustainability and climate goals. The project is targeted for completion by 2030-31. With the approval of this landmark project, Dholera Smart City is set to emerge as one of India’s best-connected industrial and technology hubs, supported by world-class rail, road, airport, and maritime infrastructure.

Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway Inaugurated: A major boost to industrial growth

India’s infrastructure development reached another milestone with the inauguration of the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway on 31 March 2026 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The project marks a significant step in strengthening connectivity between Ahmedabad and Dholera, a region being developed as one of India’s largest industrial and smart city hubs. The expressway has been designed to provide faster, safer, and more efficient travel between the two locations. By significantly reducing travel time and improving the movement of goods and passengers, the project is expected to benefit both daily commuters and industries operating in and around Dholera. Built at an estimated cost of ₹5,100 crore, the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway spans approximately 109 kilometres. It is a four-lane, access-controlled highway with provisions for future expansion. The route connects key locations such as Sarkhej, Bavla, and Adhelai, creating a direct and high-speed corridor between Ahmedabad and the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR). One of the expressway’s biggest advantages is the reduction of travel time to nearly one hour. Improved connectivity will support faster transportation of industrial goods, lower logistics costs for businesses, and ease congestion on existing road networks, providing a smoother and more efficient travel experience. Alongside the expressway, development projects worth more than ₹20,000 crore have also been launched across Gujarat. These initiatives span sectors including railways, roads, power, healthcare, and urban development, reinforcing the state’s infrastructure ecosystem and supporting long-term economic growth. The expressway also plays a crucial role in the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). As one of the key nodes of the corridor, Dholera is expected to benefit immensely from improved connectivity, enabling industries to operate more efficiently while enhancing access to upcoming infrastructure such as the Dholera International Airport and nearby ports. Better road connectivity is expected to accelerate the development of logistics parks, warehousing facilities, and industrial clusters throughout the region. Businesses will benefit from faster transportation networks and improved supply chain efficiency, making Dholera an increasingly attractive destination for new investments and industrial expansion. Large-scale infrastructure projects often reshape regional development patterns, and the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is no exception. Improved accessibility is likely to drive increased demand for land and spur commercial and industrial activity across surrounding areas. With the expressway now operational, Dholera is entering a new phase of transformation. Strong connectivity, planned infrastructure, and sustained government support are expected to position the region as one of India’s most promising destinations for industrial growth, investment, and economic development.
